A Lesson in Delayed Gratification

Lately Afton gets these ideas in her head and she won't let them go.

This week, she decided she wanted to make homemade ice cream.  I figured we'd been doing a lot of unpacking and "work" so it might be a good idea to have an afternoon of fun.

We made a special trip to the store and got all the ingredients.  Ice Cream salt being the most amazing ingredient of all (according to Afton).

I pulled out our ice cream maker that we haven't used in YEARS and realized we were missing a key piece.  Yep, we've been storing that thing in tiny apartments for about 4 years now and its been useless this whole time!

We had spent all morning getting ready to go, going to the store, prepping the ingredients- we just couldn't stop now!  So I pinterested it and found this nifty trick.  Nest a bowl inside a bigger bowl that has ice and ice cream salt in it.  Worked like a charm (well- not exactly like the machine's version but it worked for us!)

Afton was great at helping and loved the whole process...until I told her she would have to wait at least 3 hours for it to freeze.  She didn't like that one bit.

I've heard people talk about this upcoming generation and how they don't know how to wait for things.  I don't know if its the age, her generation or the fact that she is my flesh and blood, but Afton struggles with patience big time!  After this afternoon, I've decided that we are going to do more "old fashioned" activities.  Ones that take some time and effort and patience and waiting.  Its good for her.

She made it ALL the way until after dinner and FHE- and I think she enjoyed it even more than she would have if she had had it right away.
Emme did too as you can tell!
